The Bromsgrove Society held its first Bromsgrove Summer School on the 19-21 July at Housman Hall, former house of the poet A.E. Housman, and now part of Bromsgrove School. Over 70 students enrolled for the six courses, including Bromsgrove in the Industrial Revolution, Churches and Chapels of Worcestershire and Bromsgrove and the Housmans. The Summer School is to be an annual event, organised by the Bromsgrove Society in association with Bromsgrove School.
The speakers included Chris Dyer, Emeritus Professor of Local History at Leicester University and author of Bromsgrove: a Small Town in Worcestershire in the Middle Ages; Alan Petford, a Lecturer in Local History at Leeds University, who has ancestry in the Bromsgrove area. Other contributors included Jennie McGregor-Smith, author of several architectural and historical works on Bromsgrove, Jenny Townshend, Editor of the Bromsgrove Society's Rousler, and Julian Hunt, the organiser of the Summer School. The students enjoyed excellent hospitality, thanks to the catering staff of Bromsgrove School, and there was lively discussion of the various courses over lunch at Housman Hall.
On Thursday 21 July, the students were joined by Bromsgrove M.P. Sajid Javid, who heard Jeremy Bourne, formerly a master at Bromsgrove School, talking about the life and works of A.E. Housman.
The second Bromsgrove Summer School will be held on July 10-12th 2012.
